Protecting yourself when going to a destination:
- When on the bus, make sure to sit as close to the doors as possible.
- When walking alone, having your headphones in your ears is fine, but make sure your music is low or better yet, off. Loud music will make you easy prey to a predator because they know you disabled your ability to hear them.
- When in your car make sure to lock the doors, you never know if someone will try to jump in at a stop light or a stop sign.
- Always be aware of your surroundings, look around frequently, and keep your eyes and ears open.
- When walking and a person is verbally harassing you, or staring at you, instead of looking away or staring at the ground, stare directly at them. If they see you looking at them, and they know you see them, it is less likely they will attack you, because they now know that you are aware of them.
- If it is dark and a police officer tries to pull you over on a secluded road, signal that you see him, and then continue to drive until you see a well lit, and better populated area.
Self Defense
- Try to keep pepper spray on your just in case your find yourself in a dangerous situation.
- Weapons don’t always working and sometimes the best weapon is your body. When fighting off a predator, try to hit them or scratch them in the eyes. I know it sounds gross, but the eyes are the most sensitive parts of the body, even on males. If a perp gets hurt in the eye, then they will most likely forget about hurting your, and focus on their stinging eyes.
Planning
- When you enter a new space, always make a plan of how to get out of a situation safely. Know your exits, and know your blind spots, even if this just means glancing around a little.
- When at a restaurant, the safest place to sit is in a booth or table with your back facing the wall so you can see everyone around you, and no one can attack you from behind.
- Always ask for to see a license or badge when a police officer or matnince man tries to enter your home.
